Peter McIlveen, MD, MBA, FACOG

 


Dr. Peter McIlveen completed his undergraduate studies at Duke University.  In 1984 he graduated Summa Cum Laude, ranked first in his primary major.  He double majored and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.  He earned class honors and was on the dean’s list all four years.  In 1983 Dr. McIlveen received the distinction of being chosen as the ACEC National Scholar of the Year.  Dr. McIlveen also received the Tau Beta Pi Award, the Student Service Award, and the Duke University President’s Senior Leadership Award.  He continued on to receive his MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1987.

 

Dr. McIlveen completed his medical education at the University of Connecticut, graduating as a Fleeson Scholar and receiving honors in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  He completed extensive research on Monoamniotic Twins which he has presented at national clinical meetings, and his research has been published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  He also conducted research on amniotic fluid glucose measurements, with results published in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

 

Dr. McIlveen is board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology, and he is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology.  At Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, Dr. McIlveen was the Chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology from 2004 to 2006.  He currently is the Vice Chief of Staff and a member of the Medical Executive Committee.  He previously was Secretary-Treasurer of the medical staff.

 

Dr. McIlveen has special interests in high risk pregnancies and infertility.  He has had extensive experience with managing high-risk pregnancies, and has performed research and published literature on high-risk problems.  He is well-versed in twin pregnancies.  He also has helped many infertile couples achieve successful pregnancies.

 

Dr. McIlveen is also interested in uterine ablation, and he was the first physician in the Elkin area to perform these surgeries.  Additional interests include advanced laparoscopic surgery, urinary incontinence diagnosis & treatment, preventative medicine, alternative therapies, and menopause management.  His passion is guiding a woman through pregnancy and delivery, while being part of the entire pregnancy experience along with the family.  He finds each delivery as a unique and exciting experience that he feels privileged to participate in.

 

Dr. McIlveen believes that listening attentively to patients is necessary in order to provide excellent medical care.  His compassionate personality and unique bedside manner has earned him the reputation of being an extremely caring and thorough physician.

 

Dr. McIlveen is 46 years old and has been in Elkin longer than any current Ob/Gyn.  In his free time Dr. McIlveen enjoys spending time with his wife of 23 years, Lucy, and their three sons, Steven, Thomas and Christopher.  He enjoys raising his children in a small community, and he loves having the opportunity to see his patients out in the community.  He is frequently seen watching his children at basketball games and soccer matches.  He is also a huge college basketball fan, especially for Atlantic Coast Conference teams.
