One of the first signs of approaching menopause is a change in menstrual
periods. For some women periods become infrequent, with bleeding becoming
lighter or heavier. Others will get their periods more frequently, and
may begin spotting in mid-cycle. As body chemistry changes many women
gain weight, even though they have not changed their eating or exercising
habits. These premenopausal symptoms may last two years; sometimes they
can last for four to five years. Each woman is different, and this change
of life can be experienced differently. The following are general symptoms
that are associated with menopause:
- Hot flashes or flushes. These symptoms are sudden feelings of heat
that may spread all over the body. They may wake you at night.
- Difficulty sleeping.
- Changes in the vagina and urinary tract. Women become more
susceptible to dryness, infections, discomfort with intercourse,
and urinary incontinence.
- Changes in the menstrual cycle, including irregular bleeding.
- Osteoporosis.
- Emotional symptoms.
